We were travelling up a dry watercourse of the Okavango River looking for the approaching head of new seasonal flood water trickling down through the delta near Pom Pom when we heard the alarm squeals of a warthog. Quickly sourcing the sound, we came upon a large male leopard with a throat hold on a male warthog while a female warthog waited hesitantly at the entrance of their burrow before returning to the depth of its safety. Disturbed, the leopard quickly released its hold and then evaporated in a flash of yellow. Although bleeding, the warthog ran off, unscathed except for a few puncture wounds. Some hours later we returned to the same place to find the leopard had returned and patiently lying in wait above the burrow for the female warthog to come out.
